The well-known medical self-media “Dingxiang Doctor” once investigated some Hepatitis B carriers born in China in the 1980s and asked them how they were infected with Hepatitis B, and received the following answers:

“When I got vaccinated as a child, the children lined up in three rows, and each row shared a needle. Perhaps that’s how I got infected.”

“It must have been the injections. In the school clinic when I was young, an alcohol lamp was used to heat an aluminum box, inside which needles were boiled. Sometimes when there were many people, the needles were just rinsed and taken out for reuse.”

…

Older people may still have some impression of these scenes. It was also because of the weak health awareness at that time that some infectious diseases spread.

With the development of the times, this phenomenon should have long been extinct, and strictly speaking, it should no longer exist. But unexpectedly, years later, such an accident is still happening openly, and it is happening on campus.

On October 28th, Kangping County Senior High School in Shenyang, Liaoning was conducting a tuberculosis screening. What was unbelievable was that when the students waiting in line for screening extended their arms to get the injection, they were met with the same needle.

Subsequent media reports confirmed that a total of 78 students shared one needle.

The next day, the local authorities responded to the incident, saying that the incident was true and that the students had been organized to have their blood drawn again for testing.

To be honest, I was shocked when I saw this sentence in the Xin Huanghe report. I was not only shocked by so many people sharing a needle, but even more by this response.

In this response, we cannot see their nervousness about the incident, nor their awareness of the seriousness of the problem, nor their concern for the students' health. Instead, we only see their helplessness about not having done their job well in the first place and having to re-do it.

It seems that in their perception, students sharing needles is not a big deal, but rather that the tuberculosis screening work was not done well is more important, which is why they calmly said “blood has been re-drawn”.

On the third day, the local authorities finally issued a notice, stating that “During the organization of the tuberculosis skin test screening, a medical staff member violated operating procedures, involving 78 students. All affected students underwent special testing, and all results were normal.”

Simply put, a few points.

First, the special testing in Kangping County has no practical significance, at least not at this point in time.

As everyone knows, infectious diseases such as AIDS, syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C can be transmitted through blood, so they are the most concerning to the outside world, and thus the focus of this special testing.

But the problem is that some diseases are not immediately detectable. For example, the HIV virus has a detection window period of 1 to 3 weeks after infection, during which it may not be detected.

Therefore, the normal results mentioned in the notice only represent the current results.

Second, it is sad. In the original report of The Beijing News, I noticed a keyword “parents reported”, which means that the parents were the first to realize something was wrong and exposed it.

This is actually very sad. The medical staff who should have had professional knowledge, and the superior departments that should have been diligent, did not realize the problem with sharing needles. Instead, it was the parents who discovered the problem first.

Third, it is ironic. I sometimes wonder why such a simple problem, such a simple matter, could be messed up by them to this extent? Is it because of insufficient professional quality? Is it a problem of personal ability?

I don't think so. It's because these students are ordinary people. If they were replaced by the children of leaders, would this problem still occur?

I cannot give an answer, but I know that, like the campus meals that have repeatedly had food safety issues, such hygiene and safety problems will never occur in schools affiliated with government agencies.

Fourth, it is sad. This incident involves high school students. They are not young children anymore, especially now that information is highly developed and the internet is widely accessible. At least through daily exposure, they should know that needles cannot be shared. But the result is that so many people, not a single one knew that needles cannot be shared and must be disposable.

Perhaps some knew, but did not speak up, did not refuse, dared not refuse, dared not resist. If that is the case, it is even more heartbreaking.

Rousseau wrote in “Emile, or On Education”: “Nature wants children to be children before they are adults.”

Unfortunately, the education at this stage is the opposite. Children who should be high-spirited with individuality and independent personalities have all become exam-taking robots.

Is it right just because it has always been this way? Is it right just because it has been this way since ancient times? Is it right just because everyone is like this?

I cannot say more.

But I want to say that I admire those disobedient children, they will be the hope of the future society.

Finally, I want to tell a story.

I once chatted with a friend who worked in a circus and asked him how they managed to make the animals so obedient. How did they do it?

He said it was very simple. If you want animals to be obedient, you can’t let them eat too much, because when they are full, they become lazy. Only when animals don’t know where their next meal is coming from will they be obedient.

In addition to not letting them eat too much, you also have to impose small punishments occasionally. For example, if an animal does not complete the action or task as required, it will not get food and water, and can only watch other animals eat and drink.

Over time, even the most unruly animals will become submissive.

Of course, I am only talking about animals.
